Road to Yasab is a reason to fall in love with Oman offroad driving as it is the most astonishing and dramatic ascent one can do and literally a climb on the wall of the mountain. Incredibly steep and with amazing views, the road to Yasab can be crowned as the best track in Hajars. With plenty of possible options, Wadi Sahtan is a real treasure for offroad adventurers. So take the keys and jump in the ride!

Getting to the start

To head towards Wadi Sahtan, follow the route from Muscat to Nakhal and Ar Rustaq. Once you reached Ar Rustaq, at the second roundabout take the road towards Ibri and follow it. After 9 km, there will be signs to take left for Wadi Sahtan. Under normal circumstances, this is the normal road. However, when I visited Wadi Sahtan there was a major road construction blocking the road and I had to follow road to Ibri for 5 more kilometers and take left on the new road under construction. The old and the new road meet in At Tabaqah.

Track

After entering Wadi Sahtan, you will drive inside the wadi for a while and pass by some nice villages. There are multiple things to see in Wadi Sahtan, as it is a real El Dorado for 4wd adventurers, but if you follow the GPX track you will get just go all the way to Yasab. In Fasah follow road indicated to right and look for a steep climbing breathaking road on the mountain. That is where you will go. Once the ascents starts, it will be steep and I really mean steep. A few kilometers of bended track will take you on the edge of the mountain, giving you an amazing view on the entire Wadi Sahtan. It is literally a climb on the wall of the mountain to the top of it and once you reached the top is not yet done. Descend towards Yasab and keep an eye on your left for the gardens in the wadi. After reaching Yasab, just take a few pictures and come back. Stop on the way back to Wadi Sahtan in one of the few layovers and take a picnic there. Enjoy the moment, you are about to finish one of the most thrilling mountain track in Oman and the entire world.

Landmarks

The ascent towards Yasab is the most important landamark on the way. You will be impressed for sure and it will give you the chance to take some dramatic pictures to impress your buddies. However, the entire Wadi Sahtan is full of amazing tracks and you should plan for around two days of exploring here if you want to fully discover it. Don't forget to take your picnic while watching the villages in the wadi from one of the impressive high ground places.
